Call for public assistance in short-tailed shearwater investigation
DPIPWE Investigations and Enforcement Section wildlife rangers are calling for public assistance following the discovery of hundreds of short-tailed shearwater carcasses in Hobart.
The bird carcasses were found at Cameron Bay near Berriedale last week and the matter is being investigated with support from Tasmania Police.
Killing or interfering with native wildlife is illegal in Tasmania unless a person has the relevant licence or permit.
Significant penalties apply for wildlife offences. A person convicted of aggravated cruelty under the Animal Welfare Act may face fines up to $34,000 and/or up to five years jail.
Penalties under other Acts and Regulations may also apply.
Anyone with information about the short-tailed shearwater carcasses found at Cameron Bay should report it to the Investigations and Enforcement Section on 0417 661 234 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
