The Tasmanian government has committed to reviewing the efficacy of its sweeping reforms of the public sector, aiming to deliver more efficiency, productivity, and financial transparency within six years.

Ultimately, those changes may see as many as 2,500 public service jobs shed from the overall workforce, but how and when remain unknown.

It’s hard to say if, by the time 2032-33 rolls around, political and economic rumination on the state of Tasmania’s fiscal situation will still be laser-focused on the performance of the government workforce.

If last week’s budget papers are anything to go by, steps to open up the sector to more public scrutiny and improve how policymakers and stakeholders shape the decisions of government will be the topic du jour.
