Game on for Braddon

In an unprecedented show of political unrest, ten independent candidates have stepped forward to contest the state election in Braddon. This surge reflects a growing dissatisfaction with party politics and a renewed appetite for transparency, authenticity, and solutions by candidates with local values.

This is the first time in Australian history that 10 independents have stood for election in a single electorate. This demonstrates that there is a distrust in the major parties by the constituents. Six of the independents are running as a coordinated group whilst all the independents are sharing resources and mentoring each other.

The diversity among the candidates is just as striking as their number. Among them are tradesmen, small business owners, healthcare workers, environmental advocates, community leaders and youth representatives.

What unites all the independents is a shared commitment to breaking free from the constraints of rigid party lines and corporate capture.

Their presence on the ballot is not just a political anomaly, it is a powerful reminder that democracy thrives when people from all walks of life stand up and speak out.

While traditional campaigns may revolve around party loyalty and safe talking points, these independents are engaging with voters face-to-face, addressing concerns with practical, evidence-based solutions. Their campaigns are funded not by faceless donors or political lobbyists, but by people like you, neighbours, colleagues and families who believe politics should be by the people, for the people.

This is more than an election, it’s a democratic awakening. The presence of ten independent candidates sends a clear message that the community refuses to be taken for granted. We’re witnessing a peaceful protest at the ballot box, one that values independence, integrity, and public service above party power. There was a 14% swing at the federal election and it will be interesting to see where the swing happens next month.

Regardless of the outcome, this election will go down in history as a case study in participatory democracy. And perhaps most inspiring of all, it proves that when individuals step forward with courage and conviction, they can reshape the political landscape.

There is a forum being held at the Ulverstone Rowing Club on Sunday 29 June from 2 pm – 4pm where voters can hear from all the Independents and ask questions about what they all think about important issues for Braddon and Tasmania.

The choice now lies with the voters of Braddon. With ten bold voices ready to represent Braddon, the electorate has the rare opportunity to choose a path unshackled from the major parties and toward a future built by those who truly listen.
