Media release – independent MHA for Bass Rebekah Pentland, 11 March 2025
NORTHERN NEST BIG ENOUGH FOR HAWKS AND DEVILS
Bass independent Rebekah Pentland has used Question Time to quiz the Premier over the future of Tasmania’s partnership with the Hawthorn Football Club.
“Hawthorn’s partnership with Tasmania has been hugely beneficial for the northern economy and I am strongly advocating for it continue beyond 2027,” Mrs Pentland said.
“The return on investment is estimated at 5-1, which is vitally needed during the winter months.
“We’re all excited about the arrival of the Devils but there’s room for both clubs to play home games at UTAS Stadium.
“I completely respect Tasmania Football Club CEO Brendon Gale making a call on what’s best for his club, but I firmly believe an ongoing relationship with the Hawks won’t be detrimental to the Devils’ success.
“In fact, a Hawks/Devils rivalry could create a blockbuster match for Launceston.
“We’re spending $130 million upgrading UTAS Stadium. That investment deserves more than four AFL matches at the ground each year.
“It will truly be a world-class venue, so we need to maximise premium content.”
