New guidelines released to manage unreasonable conduct of Tasmanian councillors
The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen the local government sector as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
We’re taking action to help councils respond to unreasonable conduct by councillors.
The Model Guidelines, released today, will help councillors maintain professional conduct and foster respectful relationships within councils.
Developed with the Local Government Association of Tasmania, councils, and legal consultants, the Model Guidelines provide a clear framework for councils to identify and address poor conduct.
Minister for Local Government, Kerry Vincent, said professional and respectful conduct by councillors is fundamental to support effective decision-making and achieving positive outcomes for Tasmanians.
“The Model Guidelines represent a significant step forward in promoting a safe and respectful working environment within local government,” Minister Vincent said.
“By providing clear, practical advice, we are empowering councils to better manage conduct issues and ensure a positive culture and safe workplace.”
The Model Guidelines include:
- Clear guidance on what constitutes unreasonable conduct by councillors, with real-world examples;
- Explanations of current legislative frameworks and the legal obligations of all parties involved; and
- Practical strategies for general managers, focusing on early intervention and step-by-step procedures for persistent issues.
