The Long Gallery in Salamanca is currently hosting an exhibition of photographs by Richard Butler titled ‘The desire to be there’.

The show features 37 large photographs made after photographer Richard Butler returned to Tasmania after more than four decades.

The works were all made using 35mm film and were scanned and prepared for printing in his Trevallyn studio.

“I had been away from Tasmania for more than fourteen thousand days,” Butler said.

“I left to complete my arts degree, and then life continued. Two years ago I returned and stood on my deck in Trevallyn and was blown away by the weather and the way the light played through rain and storms.

“The sunrises and views across to Mt Arthur, Mt Barrow and Ben Lomond astonished me. So from that small deck this entire show of large photographs was created”

The exhibition runs until 27 November at The Long Gallery.
