Supporting Tasmanians living with disabilities to prepare for emergencies
Tasmania State Emergency Service (SES) and Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) are collaborating with disability groups, service providers, and community organisations to support emergency preparedness for Tasmanians with disabilities. This support includes conducting workshops to assist people prepare a personal emergency plan that fits their life.
With over 20% of Tasmanians having a disability, emergency readiness is essential, particularly as people with disabilities face unique challenges during emergencies, making readiness especially important,” said Mick Lowe, the Executive Director, SES & Volunteers.
“The workshops help participants develop plans that take individual needs into account, from assistive technology to transportation options, and cover issues such as the types of hazards people are exposed to, how to find information about warnings, and what to do well before, during, and after an emergency.”
“They also follow the Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) approach, which acknowledges that emergency preparedness is an ongoing process that requires communication and collaboration with support networks and emergency services.”
“Each person is the expert in their own life, and we’re here to help create a safer community,” added Mick Lowe.
The workshops are currently delivered online, with in-person sessions being scheduled in the new year. They are open to anyone identifying as living with a disability, including the elderly, caregivers, and family members.
