Seeking feedback on upgrading Lyell Highway
As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re building safer and more efficient roads right around Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Government is looking to identify upgrade options along the Lyell Highway from Granton to Strahan and is seeking views on what members of the public would like to see done.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the Government was developing a corridor strategy for the highway and the public’s feedback would form an important part of identifying and prioritising improvements.
“The Australian Government has committed $80 million towards upgrading the Lyell Highway between Granton and New Norfolk, with the Tasmanian Government committing $20 million,” the Premier said.
“This strategy will identify the best use of that money, as well as give us a clear picture of what is needed along the rest of the highway for future funding.
“The Lyell Highway is the main access road for towns in the Derwent Valley, central highlands and west coast areas, including New Norfolk, Ouse, Derwent Bridge, Queenstown and Strahan.
“We want to better understand how the local community, businesses, tourists and commuters use the road to investigate potential improvements and upgrades.
“These improvements could include shoulder and road widening, new overtaking lanes, new and improved active and public transport facilities, intersection upgrades and more.”
The public consultation period will run from Monday, 14 October to Monday, 18 November 2024.
Community members can have their say through a variety of means, including via an interactive map and online survey, completing a feedback form at one of five displays or attending one of five drop-in sessions where project team members will be available to answer questions.

Feedback received during consultation will assist with determining future funding and priority sites.
