Virtuosi Tasmania presents a celebration of old, new and always-listenable brass repertoire featuring:

Compass Brass
with special guests
Next Generation Brass

Be dazzled and inspired by some of Hobarts best. Rossini and Bernstein are the names you know. Victor Ewald’s quintet no.1 – imagine if Tchaikovsky had written a brass quintet. A romantic masterpiece. Contemporary, but always melodious, music by three living Tasmanian composers rounds out the program. A veritable feast of brass quintets.

Program Notes

Fanfare for brass By Matt Boden is an uplifting and pyrotechnical start to our show. Written this year for Compass. Matt is an accomplished pianist and composer. He has many film orchestration credits to his name also. A world premiere!

The Hierophant by Tim Jones is in three movements. A fun exploration of the passing of knowledge from generation to generation. Mvt 1, A Song of the Ages, delves into the deep past. Mvt2, Life’s Merry Dance, depicts the competition of modern times and mvt 3, Towards Utopia hopes for a positive future of humanity.

Next Generation Brass, our special guests are an exciting and well-polished young brass quintet. Keeping the tradition alive, they play Victor Ewald’s Quintet no. 1 circa 1890. A masterpiece of brass repertoire, it is one of the earliest examples of the form. In three contrasting movements it is a fabulous piece of chamber music in the romantic style. This will be followed by a number from West Side Story.

Compass brass returns with Yoram Levy performing an aria from Rossini’s Barber of Seville. ‘Dunque io Son’ A charming and flashy piece played on the Eb trumpet.

Sacha Dozal’s Quintet no.1 ‘Hobart’ follows. A delightful and melodious piece written by Hobartian Sacha, who is a gifted trombonist, pianist and composer. The future of music is in good hands. Sacha is currently studying at UTAS.

Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 3 concludes today’s program. A brilliant piece. The two groups will unite for this performance of a ‘double-quintet’. Enjoy the wealth of fine brass playing in Tasmania.
