Confidence and supply agreements – a Tasmanian twist
This video discusses ‘confidence and supply agreements’ that are used to give greater security to a minority government in a hung Parliament. It goes on to discuss the confidence and supply agreement of 10 April 2024 between the Tasmanian Liberal Rockliff Government and three members of the Jacqui Lambie Network (JLN). The agreement is remarkable for how much control it purports to give the Government and how little of substance it gives to the JLN members. Yet because such agreements are not legally binding, it will be interesting to see how long this one, given its prescriptive measures, actually lasts.

This video clearly explains what a dog’s breakfast and naïve agreement the Liberals’ alliance with the Jacquie Lambert Network is.
Surely, if the JLN has viewed this video, it would now be ruminating over its hasty decision to handcuff itself to the Liberals’ oppressive demands. The fact that supply and confidence can’t be a binding agreement will be the primary linchpin to the inevitable collapse of the alliance. If I was a bookmaker, I’d be giving you very low odds of this debacle lasting more than several months!
Just like the Greens’ alliance disasters of the past, the seduction of political power and short-lived eminence has drawn these rookie-elected members to most likely sell their souls and principles. Time will tell, and that won’t be too long, methinks!
