Protest at Tasmanian puppet leaders debate
Forest and cceans defenders are rallying outside the puppet leaders debate in Tasmania. While a large banner has been dropped off sidewalk poles outside the Hobart Town Hall, calling for environmental protection, during the other-parties-excluded Liberals and Labor leaders debate.
“Until Tasmania’s Labor and Liberal leaders come good on environmental and climate action, they are representing the nature destroying corporations and failing the Tasmanian people. Ending native forest logging is urgent and the majority of Tasmanians want protection of the wildlife-filled forests across the island. Both Labor and Liberal leaders are backing in the ongoing destruction of critically endangered swift parrot habitat and some of the world’s most carbon dense forests. This leader’s debate is a cocoon to protect them from the growing public alarm about native forest logging, industrial fish farming and the heating planet,” said Jenny Weber, Bob Brown Foundation Campaigns Manager.
“The so called ‘leaders’ debate really should be between the CEO of Tassal and the CEO of Huon Aquaculture, with the CEO of Petuna as a moderator. These are the people who really decide the fate of Tasmania’s waterways and they have collectively decided that they are going to pollute and destroy them. The only debate between Premier Rockliff and Rebecca White is who is applauding this destruction louder. With the state election this weekend, vote for a government that will protect our unique waterways from toxic salmon farms,” said Alistair Allan, Bob Brown Foundation’s Marine and Antarctica Campaigner.
After the state election on Saturday, Bob Brown Foundation will lobby the next Tasmanian State Government – irrespective of whoever forms it – to take action to secure the protection and restoration of Tasmania’s environment.
