Cricket Tasmania set to pull up stumps from Blundstone Arena at Bellerive
Bellerive Oval could be vacated, and its infrastructure sold off by Cricket Tasmania, under a bold proposal by the sporting body to relocate to a brand new home.
The ABC understands Cricket Tasmania will pitch to both major political parties, as well as all individual candidates running for parliament in the current election, about an increase in funding for cricket — and seek a commitment to help the organisation build a new home for the sport, most likely on Hobart’s eastern shore.
The governing body for cricket in Tasmania has been on the hunt for a suitable parcel of land where it would construct a new high-performance centre, which would likely include a new administration base and indoor centre, as well as dual ovals.
It’s believed several sites on Hobart’s eastern shore have already been identified, including some privately owned, which would require purchase.
It’s unclear how much government funding Cricket Tasmania would require, but it’s understood that proceeds gained by the organisation via sale of the infrastructure at Bellerive Oval would be used to help fund the project.
