LILYDALE PLAYGROUND – COMMUNITY CELEBRATION EVENT
It may be small news in a larger city, but the formal opening of the Lilydale community playground this weekend (Sunday 1 October) marks a special milestone for the people of the Lilydale district.
Lilydale is a district that is experiencing rapid growth as young families take advantage of its relaxed, rural lifestyle and ‘Goldilocks’ location just 20 minutes from Launceston.
However, it has been a long time since Lilydale’s infrastructure has met the needs of its residents.
In fact, the mothers of today’s young mothers have their own stories about unsuccessfully appealing for a playground for their children.
That changed in 2023 thanks to the lobbying efforts of a determined group of young mums, the support of City of Launceston Councillor Andrew Palmer and a decision by the City of Launceston to utilise the space in front of the Lilydale swimming pool.
A community grant from Hydro Tasmania to the Lilydale community expanded the budget to include seating.
In less than two weeks from its completion, the playground is already a popular meeting place for young families and a firm favourite with the children of Lilydale.
The playground will be officially opened by the Mayor of Launceston, Matthew Garwood. The Lilydale Lions Club will provide sausages and there will be balloons, face painting and – of course – the playground itself.
Date: Sunday 1 October 2023
Time: 11:00AM to 11:45AM
Place: Lilydale community playground, 1954 Main Road, Lilydale
