Media release – Rosalie Woodruff MP, 1 August 2023
New Greens Team Confirmed
The Tasmanian Greens are proud to have the wonderful Vica Bayley elected to the House of Assembly as the new Member for Clark.
Vica has a long track record fighting for a better future for our island home and the people who live here. This experience, and his passion for Tasmania, make him an excellent fit for this new role.
Following Vica’s election today, we formally agreed that I will be the new Leader of the Tasmanian Greens. Taking on this role is an immense honour, and there’s huge shoes to fill, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.
With the recount now complete, we’re really excited about heading into parliament next week and making the most of the opportunity presented by the balance-of-power in the House.
Tasmanians are concerned about climate change, the rising cost of living, the dangerous state of the health system, and the damage being done to our environment.
It’s time for the Parliament to act on these critical issues, and we’re looking forward to seeing what common ground we can find with other MPs to deliver better outcomes for Tasmania and its people.
Vica Bayley MP
It’s an incredible privilege and a great responsibility to have been elected to the parliament today. My deepest thanks to the people of Clark for putting your trust in me, and to Greens members for the opportunity to represent them too.
I’m also really pleased to be able to work with Rosalie, and to draw on her years of experience. There is no doubt she will make a fantastic Greens’ Leader.
This is an exciting time to come into the House of Assembly. It feels like there’s a real possibility of change on issues that have been ignored by the Liberals for far too long.
The Rockliff Government is now in minority, and we have a parliament that has shown itself willing to override the Premier’s wishes when necessary.
The Liberals are focused on building a billion-dollar stadium in Hobart while so many other important issues are being neglected. The Greens’ focus is firmly fixed on driving positive change for the benefit of all Tasmanians.
When parliament returns next week we will be doing everything we can to work constructively across party lines to deliver real action on climate change, the cost of living, healthcare, environmental protection, and so much more.

Bob Brown jubilant at Vica Bayley’s election
Former state and federal Greens leader Bob Brown says he is jubilant at Vica Bayley’s election to represent Clark in the House of Assembly.
“Vica is a worldly-wise man, born and bred in Tasmania, who sees our island state as a beacon of natural goodness in a rapidly deteriorating global environment. He will be a bastion for Tasmania’s clean, green lifestyle against the exploitative forces wanting to turn Tasmania into a clearfelled quarry. The team of Rosalie Woodruff and Vica Bayley will continue to keep the Greens being the real opposition for Tasmanians despairing of the Labor opposition trying to outdo the Liberals in fostering corporate override of public opinion, from aquaculture to cable cars to the destruction of swift parrot nesting forests.”
This election keeps alive the strong tradition of wilderness and heritage protection for Tasmania in non-Laborial Clark MPs stretching back to Norm Sanders, who was first elected in 1980, then Bob Brown, Peg Putt, Cassy O’Connor and now Vica Bayley.
