Media release – Commissioner for Transport, 20 April 2023
Upcoming speed limit changes for Highland Lakes Road
The Commissioner for Transport has approved a speed limit reduction on a 1.6 kilometre section of Highland Lakes Road between Marlborough Road and Lochiel Drive, Miena.
The current speed limit of 100 km/h will be reduced to 80 km/h, extending the current 80 km/h speed zone north of Miena.
The decision to lower the speed limit was made based on the characteristics of the road, including the lines of sight for drivers and the number of accesses.
The changed speed limit will come into effect once the new speed limit signs have been installed, which is expected to be in the first weeks of May. ‘New speed limit ahead’ signs will also be placed to warn road users of the change.
Road users are reminded to follow the posted speed limits and always drive to the conditions.

Sealing work on Bass Highway
Watch out for sealing on the Bass Highway between McKays Road, Somerset and Old Bass Highway, Doctors Rocks from Saturday, 22 April to Saturday, 29 April 2023.
We will be working from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm and there will some temporary traffic changes during these hours, including a reduced speed limit and lane closures.
To seal a road surface, we need clear and mild weather conditions. We will only need one day to do the work and will choose the best day closer to the start of work.
Please allow extra travel time if you plan to travel through this site during this time and remember to keep to the speed limit and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.
This is the final piece of work in the Bass Highway – Somerset to Wynyard realignment project.
The realignment project is part of the Bass Highway – Cooee to Wynyard program of works and includes the widening and realignment of the Bass Highway between Somerset and Doctors Rocks. Through this project we have addressed sharp corners and bends, provided overtaking lanes and installed flexible safety barriers to prevent head-on collisions.
