Tasmania’s The Examiner newspaper parts ways with editor in wake of fake trans incident letter
The editor at the centre of a faked account of a man entering female change rooms at a public pool being printed in a major Tasmanian newspaper has parted ways with the publication.
Mark Westfield has told the ABC he is no longer the editor of The Examiner newspaper, just days after explaining he did not have time to check the claims made in letters to the paper.
The letter detailed a supposed incident in which a man had started to undress in front of children in the female change rooms at the Launceston aquatic centre.
The Examiner published the controversial letter last week under the headline “Girls getting changed, then in walks a man”.

“…and also worked for failed Liberal candidate Katherine Deves at last year’s federal election.”
In this matter, it’s reasonable to speculate a connection between Westfield, a Newscorp loyalist, happy to continue Newscorp’s anti-trans fear-mongering here, and his role working for public transphobe, Deves, a person who claimed half of trans men are sex offenders and likened anti-trans activism to opposing the Holocaust.
I suggest the connection is misogyny, specifically theocratic misogyny. (First they came for the trans people, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t trans. Then they came for the gays…then they came for the women…etc. Check current US State legislation changes in Republican states for horrifying confirmation of misogynist bigotry being entrenched in law following similar fear and hate campaigns.)
Still, I’m sure Mister Westfield will land on his feet. Perhaps there’s a job going here in Tasmania with Senator Claire Chandler.
