CEO Appointed to Southern Tasmanian Regional Waste Authority
The newly formed Board of the Southern Tasmanian Regional Waste Authority (STRWA) has wasted no time in moving forward and are pleased to announce the appointment of an inaugural CEO.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Jackson to the position of CEO” said STRWA Chair Dr Katrena Stephenson.
“Paul Jackson is a local government professional with 18 years’ experience.
“He is an admitted practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania and most recently has been employed by the City of Hobart as the Manager Legal and Governance.
“This has involved acting as in-house lawyer for the City of Hobart – looking after property, commercial and governance matters. In this role Paul also managed the Council Support Unit, responsible for supporting elected members and facilitating meetings of the Council and Committees.
“Paul is also the current state President of Local Government Professionals Tasmania.
Mr Jackson said, “This is a new and exciting opportunity for me and I will draw on my local government experience to work closely with councils and industry stakeholders on how we deal with waste – one of the most significant challenges of our generation.
Paul will be commencing with STRWA on 24th April and will be co-located with the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT).
The STRWA has been established by the 12 Southern Councils to ensure a more effective and efficient coordination of waste management and resource recovery.
“There is already significant waste minimisation and resource effort being undertaken by southern councils”, says Dr Katrena Stephenson, the independent Chair of the STRWA.
“We have councils leading the way with ambitious zero waste to landfill strategies, kerbside food and organics collection, innovative education campaigns, single use plastic container bans at council events and the list goes on.
“However, now more than ever we need to think about waste in a coordinated way.
“With the introduction of the Waste and Resource Recovery Act 2022, the establishment of the State’s Waste and Resource Recovery Board and the current development of the inaugural Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2022-2025, councils are critical partners in ensuring a sustainable future.”
“The STRWA Board firmly believes that our inaugural CEO, Paul Jackson, shares our drive and commitment to deliver on the important functions of the STWRA”.
