Tasmanians are invited to participate in a virtual town hall meeting on Saturday 18 February to discuss the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to parliament.

The town hall meeting has been called by Labor Senator Anne Urquhart to begin community conversations about the upcoming referendum on the Voice.

Senator Urquhart will be joined by

  • Thomas Mayo, a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man. Mayo is the author of the book Finding the Heart of the Nation – the Journey of the Uluru Statement towards Voice, Treaty and Truth.
  • Senator Malarndirri McCarthy,is a Yanyuwa woman from the Gulf country in the Northern Territory.

The virtual town hall aims to focus on what the Voice is, what it is not, and why it matters.

Using a recently developed, interactive, online platform developed by an Australian firm called Civility Tech, participants will be able to engage with speakers in real time, ask questions and express their thoughts on the Voice.

The town hall meeting is part of a week of activity in Tasmania that aims kick-start an information campaign on the upcoming referendum to ensure that all Tasmanians are armed with the information they need to vote on the Voice.
