October flood recovery update

Work continues on St Marys Pass, the Tasman Highway through the Sideling and Poatina Road after damage during October’s floods.

At St Marys Pass, work to repair a landslip continues and the gabion wall is progressing well.

St Marys Pass will reopen before Christmas, and we will let people know the exact timeframe as soon as we can.

When complete, the gabion wall will be made up of around 210 baskets and will be about seven metres tall and 40 metres wide.

It will have used 3000 tonnes of rock, 400 tonnes of base material, and just over 75 cubic metres of concrete.

We have also built concrete block walls to support four other downhill slips with just over 100 concrete blocks used.

Crews working at Elephant Pass have been moved to complete additional works at St Marys Pass ahead of the road reopening.

We are continuing to work on the Tasman Highway through the Sideling following October’s landslip.

A gabion wall is being built down the embankment to support the road and help prevent future landslips at this location.

Work at the Sideling project construction site is also continuing during the road closure.

Poatina Road remains reduced to one lane over Poatina Creek while we continue to install culverts and their supports.

Work to repair and stabilise the damaged road cuttings is underway. The aim is still to open the road to two lanes before Christmas.

We also continue to work on other roads across the network following the flooding.

We have started longer-term repairs on Mole Creek Road between Railton Road and Spreyton. This work should take around a week to complete.

Repair work on the Tasman Highway between Bicheno and Seymour is also underway.

We thank the public for their patience while we work to return roads to safe conditions and once again remind them that traffic management and road closures are in place for their safety and must be obeyed.
