McGuire’s radical plan to combine Kangaroos with Tasmania to form ‘super club’ revealed

Eddie McGuire has revealed his radical plan for a Melbourne-based team — in this instance North Melbourne — to combine with Tasmania to form a ‘super club’.

Under McGuire’s proposition detailed on Channel 9’s Footy Classified, the Kangaroos would play 11 games in Melbourne and 11 games in Tasmania and have legendary boss Alastair Clarkson as coach and a promotor of the game in the Apple Isle.

It comes after a report that opposition from a core group of club presidents towards a 19th license poses as a threat to Tasmania’s bid to enter the competition.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan confirmed last week the league was only considering issuing a new license — not relocating one of the 18 current clubs — and that Tasmania would need a new stadium to be considered, while the state’s government has been long committed to only a stand-alone franchise.

And North Melbourne, who is fixtured to play four AFL games in Tasmania this year, has been steadfast that it has no plans to relocate.

But McGuire emphasised that his plan would be remodelling of the club with two home bases, claiming it would help the Roos prosper.

“This is not driving a team, this is not pushing a team out, this is an idea,” he said on Footy Classified.

“For the simple reason that North Melbourne are struggling at the moment, their supporters are a little bit upset, there’s not much going on, the crowds aren’t big.
