Statement – Rowing Tasmania, 30 May 2022
Statement by Rowing Tasmania
Rowing Tasmania is aware of an incident that took place at Lake Barrington International Rowing Course on 3rd March 2018.
This incident involved the indecent assault and rape by Mr Timothy Leslie Brown, who at the time was Vice President and Treasurer of the Huon Rowing club as well as their juniors’ coach, against Mrs. Sally Millington-Schwan.
Tasmania Police became involved and charged Mr Brown on 7th March 2018 with three counts of indecent assault and one count of rape.
As a result of these charges Mr Brown was found guilty by the Supreme Court of Tasmania and sentenced to a term of imprisonment of four years in July 2019
Rowing Tasmania extends its genuine remorsefulness for the incident that occurred at the Lake Barrington International Rowing Course.
Furthermore, Rowing Tasmania strongly condemns the criminal actions of Mr Brown and note that these actions are not acceptable by either Rowing Tasmania or by the broader community.
Rowing Tasmania has conducted an internal review of the way the Member Protection Complaint was handled and apologises to Mr Schwan, Mrs Millington-Schwan, their family and other members of the Huon Rowing Club, for the failings which occurred during the process, and realise that we must hold ourselves accountable for these failings in order to improve protection of our members.
The review will lead to the implementation of a number of protocols being introduced both internally and to the member clubs.
Rowing Tasmania is aware of its obligations under the Rowing Australia Member Protection Policy and takes these obligations very seriously.
Rowing Tasmania takes this opportunity to remind all its members of the importance of the Rowing Australia Member Protection Policy and the need for all members of the rowing community to be provided with a safe and supportive environment
