RESPONSE TO GOVERNMENT’S FISH FIN REVIEW RECOMMENDATIONS
NWTAS for Clean Oceans has endorsed all the recommendations in the government’s own Fin Fish Review released this week.
Ben Lans, group spokesperson said: “Many of the 68 recommendations are aimed at correcting the lamentable or non-existent systems and processes necessary to:
- gain social license for the industry from Tasmanian citizens, and
- ensure the industry is environmentally responsible and sustainable.
In order to recover long lost trust with the Tasmanian community, it is imperative the government adopt an objective implementation process.
We are therefore calling on the government to immediately appoint an independent and expert Task Force to oversee implementation of all 68 recommendations.
Until the recommendations are fully implemented we are also calling for a moratorium on all new or expanded salmon leases in coastal and Commonwealth waters.
Further, it is imperative the government’s proposed Ten Year Salmon Plan, complies with the Fish Fin Review recommendations.
We expect some of the Fin Fish Review recommendations may well be resisted by the salmon industry which has had it too easy for way too long. We challenge the new Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, and Jo Palmer the new Minister for Primary Industries and Water, to take this opportunity to clean up the salmon industry, once and for all, before it is too late.”
NOTE: NWTAS for Clean Oceans and its growing membership is fighting to stop open salmon feed lots in Bass Strait and for transition of all salmon farms to land-based Reticulated Aquaculture Systems.
