Artology and Spring Bay Mill are have announced the call for submissions for the 2022 Very Short Film Festival.

Now in its second year, the Very Short Film Festival is open to storytellers of all ages from anywhere in Australia. Themes and genres are not prescribed but completely open to the imagination of the entrants. The only restriction is the length of the work – between two and five minutes. And this year’s signature theme, ‘spring’, has to be in there somewhere as well – how and where is up to the filmmakers.

Cash prizes for winning entrants will be awarded in two categories – up to 21 years old and over 21. Entrants also benefit from Q&A sessions and masterclasses with leading screenwriters and producers.

“It was such a transformative moment for our filmmakers last year that I can’t wait to see what is created around the country this time,” said Anna Cerneaz, MD of Artology.

“Creating meaningful films in such a condensed way is something people are doing all over the world – but to do it with depth, integrity and purpose can be hard. This is not a festival for the established filmmaker, but for those that have a story to tell.”

Spring Bay Mill will provide the venue on the east coast of Tasmania for the red carpet screening event at which the winners will be announced on Friday 20 May 2022. The winning films will be able to be viewed online. Shortlisted entries will be announced on Friday 6 May 2022.

“The last two years have shown us how much we need skilled, courageous storytelling and stories that can show us who we are and who we can be,” said Nell Greenwood, CEO, Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

“This is such a timely and terrific competition and I am delighted to be on the judging panel. The very short form is a beautiful challenge – it’s about taking risks, being bold, keeping it simple – and I can’t wait to see the brilliant stories and talent that emerge.”
