Media release – Neighbours of Fish Farming, 26 November 2021
Defending our Environment
Neighbours of Fish Farming is to launch a major campaign aimed at Australia’s biggest supermarkets, Woolworths, Coles and IGA.
The campaign will call on the retailers to live up to their claims of ‘sustainability’ by bringing pressure to bear on Tasmanian industrial farmed salmon to transition out of the state’s waterways.
The campaign will be launched at a Hobart Town Hall meeting at 12.30 Tuesday, November 30, 2021 (see attached motion)
The supermarkets are competing against each other to be more ‘green’, more ‘responsible’ and more ‘sustainable’ but while they continue to stock Tasmania’s industrial salmon, the claims amount to no more than hollow marketing.
Already a change.org petition has gathered more than 35,000 signatures from across Australia for the supermarkets to sign up to the Dennes Point Declaration. The declaration (attached) calls for an immediate moratorium on any increased production, a transition out of the state’s waterways and regulation led by transparently independent science and regulation.
NOFF and allied groups, including the Tasmanian Alliance for Marine Protection (TAMP) have already taken part in discussions with Woolworths but the supermarket chain continues to rely on sustainability accreditation organisations that have already been discredited.
NOFF and its allies will maintain and increase the pressure on the supermarkets while alerting their customers across the country to the false claims that industrial salmon is a healthy, sustainable product.
Defending our Environment Motion to the “Eating Salmon? Killing Tasmania” Public Meeting at the Hobart Town Hall November 30, 2021 12.30-1.30pm
We are here today to say to all Australians who care about the environment: Don’t buy the lie. We call on Woolworths, Coles, and IGA to honour their public claims of sustainability by using their power to support the immediate transition to sustainable land-based salmon farming to stop the destruction of Tasmania’s waterways.
