Poatina bakery Big Bite Dutch Treats is celebrating its 7 medals in the Tasmanian Fine Food Awards, and Champion and Reserve Champion in the baked products categories.

Owners Richard and Melanie Smit are over the moon with the recent success.

“We joked about how we could be Champion and started calling each other ‘champion’ every time we had done something, like finish baking or cleaning the kitchen,” they said. “And now we really are Champion!”

Richard and Melanie both have a youth and community work background and are self-taught bakers.

As one of their customers said: “None too shabby for a pair of youth workers!”

Richard and Melanie moved to Australia ten years ago and eventually moved to Tasmania where they started their tiny authentic Dutch bakery. They never dared to dream that their business would grow so fast and win awards competing against major producers and bakeries.

Big Bite Dutch Treats is a traveling and online small business in Tasmania and has had success with their Dutch biscuits and pastries. Gold medal winners: Coconut Square (also Champion), Apricot Round (also Reserve Champion) and Jan Hail biscuits. Silver medal winners: Stroopwafels (Dutch syrup waffles), Speculaas biscuits. Bronze medal winners: Coconut Ring and Crunchy Peanut Biscuits.

Big Bite Dutch Treats trades from markets and events around Tasmania serving a large range of Dutch goods including favourites such as oliebollen (Dutch donuts) and Dutch hot chocolate.

Products are also available through their online shop (shipping Australia wide), Launceston region and Northern Midlands deliveries and click & collect options.

The Tasmanian Fine Food Awards are held annually and are open for entries from all over Australia.
