Ecofest – Ulverstone’s community sustainability expo – returns this weekend on Saturday 10 April.
With the theme of ‘a 2021 vision’, hosts North-West Environment Centre say this year’s festival will feature stallholders and information to help you live a more sustainable life and to focus on a future full of potential and innovation.
The event will also highlight good work already being done around the area.
“Last year, our theme was ‘a 2020 vision’, but who could have seen (2020) coming? Not us,” said event organiser Cassie Smith. “We’re really shining a light on those who are already leading a sustainable life. “There are some great things happening out in the community, and we get to showcase all these wonderful things,” she said.
Throughout the day the stalls will provide information on how to lead an environmentally conscious lifestyle including sustainable product swaps, tutorials and displays, and a workshop on creating your own beeswax wraps.
A 25 kilogram ball of plastic cling wrap on display is conceived as a conversation starter around the question ‘how much do you use in a year?’ and recognising what this may mean for coming generations.
“What we want to do each year is start a lot of conversations,” explained Smith. “Going back to our vision for the event, we want people to see there are some positive changes we can all make.”
Other drawcards will be food stalls, live entertainment and a transparent beehive providing a window into the inner workings of a colony of bees.
Ecofest typically attracts visitors from across Tasmania and organisers are hoping for another good turnout this year.
The festival takes place at the Wharf Precinct, Ulverstone, from 10am to 4pm.
Cassie Smith from Ecofest spoke to SeaFM Devonport about this year’s event.
