‘Spring in Tasmania’

By E. Eynsford Moore

I saw the reddening sunset slowly gild
The darkling mountain and the lake’s deep wave,
When Spring her raiment to the breezes gave.
By wood primeval and by plain untilled.
And when at eve the moving winds were stilled,
And its pale radiance in the twilight grew,
Like a gold shadow in the shade, I knew
The timeless cycle was once more fulfilled.
And where the valley deeps lay hushed and chill
A haunting breath sighed o’er the drifted snow;
I heard it pass the silent vales along,
Moaning the burden of its undersong,
Like some forgotten echo mourning low
The cadence of a voice forever still.
