Media release – Roger Jaensch, Minister for Environment and Parks, 8 May 2020

Parks and reserves to reopen for exercise

Tasmania’s national parks and reserves, including beaches, will once again be open for the public to enjoy when undertaking exercise.

From Monday 11 May, Tasmanians can undertake health and wellbeing activities in parks and reserves located within 30 kilometres of their place of residence, and limited to day trips.

Our parks and reserves are much loved by all Tasmanians, and the easing of these restrictions is good news for all in the community who have been missing their local reserves to exercise in.

The tough decision to close them has been instrumental in limiting non-essential travel and preventing the spread of COVID-19, and I thank everyone in the community for their understanding during this difficult time.

Tasmanians will be able to undertake activities such as mountain biking, or surfing at beaches where these activities are normally permitted, provided social distancing is followed and the park or reserve is within 30 kilometres of their home.

Wellington Park will also reopen for exercise, however, Pinnacle Road will remain closed.

The message remains, if you don’t need to leave your home to go to work, to school, to get essential supplies, to provide care or to exercise – then you should stay at home.

Tasmanians must continue to observe social distancing rules, and move on once they have completed their exercise. If carparks are full, please move on and return at another time.

Campgrounds and visitor centres remain closed until further notice.

Reopened parks and reserves will be monitored to ensure that social distancing and gathering rules are adhered to.

For more information on the limited reopening of reserves visit the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife website at www.parks.tas.gov.au

Editor’s note: Tasmanian Botanical Gardens will also re-open to the Hobart public from next Monday, 11 May. As part of its re-opening, limited public facilities will be available at the Gardens with only the toilet facilities open.
