Tourism Tas boss joins secret Cable Car lobby group

On 29th May Tourism Head James Cretan joined a closed private Facebook group aimed to “mobilise supporters to action”.

How can Mr Cretan claim no conflict of interest when he has joined a group whose stated aim is to actively lobby for a company in which he is an investor … ?

And he is in a key position to lobby for that company to achieve its aims as Chairman of Tourism Tasmania?

    It is interesting how much vehemence there is in the opposition in Tasmania to a cable car.

    For one who lived in Cape Town back in 1972, not far from the cable station, and with a full view from the kitchen window of the part of the mountain it serviced. I found the cable car totally unobtrusive and when lit up at night a fairytale star in the sky.

    I rode the cable car once to service the relay communications equipment to get commercial VHF radio signals over mountain. It is a very energy-efficient means of ascending a mountain, both for convenience and energy, over a motor vehicle road ascent.

    Although I do not know the comparable safety statistics I would think it’s a good deal safer than road. It could also be engineered to be operational under weather conditions that close the road.

    For the tourist trade I would think it is a no brainer. It would add some romance to the city as well as having a practical side.

    On current town planning philosophy a cable car fits well into the limitation of city containment, and the city should provide enjoyment and recreation for the population it contains.
