TasWater crews have successfully and safely repaired an elevated sewer line broken over night when a large tree fell on the concrete pipe.
The elevated pipe crosses a creek in a reserve at the end of Flinders Esplanade.
Two cranes were called in to help with the repair, first to enable arborists to clear the tree from around the pipe and then to lift it out of the steep, inaccessible creek.
The crane then suspended a TasWater repair crew in a work cage to replace the broken length of pipe.
Investigations are continuing into what impact the sewage spill has had on the creek and the adjacent beach area on the shore of the River Derwent.
The Environment Protection Authority and Council Environmental Health Officers have also inspected the location. The results of water samples taken earlier today will be known tomorrow and people are urged to take the advice of warning notices placed in the area of the sewage spill.
TasWater appreciates the patience and cooperation of the residents in Flinders Esplanade while the repair work was carried out.
