Former FBI director James Comey has testified in front of the US Senate intelligence committee, intensifying one of the largest controversies to dog the fledgling Trump administration.

Comey stated that US President Donald Trump lied about reasons for firing Comey in May when he claimed FBI agents had lost confidence in the director, saying “the administration … chose to defame me and the FBI by saying the agency was in disarray. Those were lies, plain and simple”. He revealed that he arranged to leak memos about conversations with Trump to the media, and turned over copies of his memos to special prosecutor Robert Mueller III
