Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

The clean energy target proposed by the Finkel energy security review – and fêted as the solution to Australia’s decade-long stalemate on climate policy – may be dead already.

Yesterday a Coalition joint party room meeting approved almost every recommendation made by the chief scientist Alan Finkel, while energy minister Josh Frydenberg announced the implementation of a CET would be analysed further. The concession to backbench conservatives, who have opposed the CET since it was announced two weeks ago, should make for interesting material when Finkel addresses the National Press Club this afternoon.
