An inquest into youth suicide in Western Australian Indigenous communities has heard that 13 young Indigenous people in WA’s Kimberley region have died by suicide in the past three-and-a-half years.
The inquest, chaired by WA coroner Ros Fogliani, began in Perth yesterday and will travel to communities throughout the state’s north in coming weeks. At the inquest’s outset, counsel assisting the coroner Philip Urquhart said the Kimberley’s extraordinary rates of Indigenous youth suicide are proof that traditional approaches have failed, and that “if there ever was a time for change, it is now”.
