Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

The Fair Work Commission has raised the minimum wage by $22.20 a week to $18.29 an hour as part of its annual wage review.

The statement from the FWC expert panel on the national minimum wage, led by president Justice Iain Ross, said that while “the increase we propose to award will not lift all award-reliant employees out of poverty”, it will lead to “an improvement in their relative living standards”. As is traditional, employer groups criticised the raise as being too high and unions said it was not high enough.
