Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.
Two men have died and three police officers have been shot after a stand-off in an apartment block in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton.
Police arrived at the scene yesterday afternoon after reports of an explosion, before finding a body in the building’s foyer and receiving a 000 call from a woman claiming she was being held hostage inside. At about 6pm a man emerged from one of the apartments and began firing at police before being shot dead. Victoria Police are investigating whether the incident has any connection to terrorism, but concluded that the reported explosion was likely gunfire.
