Student’s spitting out the Liberal’s main course
Scott Morrison will be the target of protest when he visits Perth Arena on June 30 for a breakfast with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The National Union of Students is organizing the protest to stand up for penalty rates, which are set to be cut the following day with Morrison’s support.
The cuts to penalty rates will mean a cut in take-home pay of up to $6,000 a year for some workers in hospitality, fast food, pharmacy and retail. The decision was made by the Fair Work Commission in February and has been supported by the Liberal party who voted against attempts to reverse the decision.
NUS Welfare Officer Jill Milloy said, “This is a government who will happily give handouts to the big end of town whilst letting 700,000 of our lowest paid workers suffer. Students rely on the $77 they can earn on a Sunday in order to get by.”
“Scott Morrison is coming to hear the opinions of bosses on the Liberal’s actions”, said NUS Education Officer Anneke D’emanuele, “Scott Morrison doesn’t want to hear from students and workers. We’ll have to fight to be heard and fight to defend our penalty rates against the Liberals.”
The National Union of Students is calling on students and workers to join them at 7am on June 30 outside the Perth Arena.
