Energy Minister’s Basslink embarrassment

Matthew Groom’s incompetent record as Energy Minister has been exposed during Budget estimates hearings today.

Shadow Energy Minister Scott Bacon said Tasmanians have not forgotten Mr Groom’s role in causing last year’s energy crisis which cost the state at least $140 million.

“During the crisis Mr Groom’s only answer to energy security was to build a second Basslink cable,” Mr Bacon said.

“But despite spending $2.5 million and 3 years “making the case” for a second cable, the project is more uncertain than ever.

“The Minister is so embarrassed by his failings on this issue that he didn’t even acknowledge the release of Dr John Tamblyn’s Basslink feasibility study when it was released last month.

“That might be because the Tamblyn report warned the cost to consumers of a second cable may outweigh the benefits.

“Mr Groom’s claim that other states will pay for the cost of the cable is also fanciful.

“Raising the issue at a Ministerial Council meeting does not amount to agreement.

“Mr Groom’s vague assurances, weasel words and spin do not mask his abject failure as Energy Minister.”
