In the early days of his prime ministership, John Howard shared with some a private view about universities: Don’t spend money on them, the people there don’t vote for us.

This week the government announced plans to save $2.8 billion through cuts to university funding and increases to student payments.

This is about more than budget savings. It is about the established fact that the more educated a person becomes, the less likely they are to vote conservative.
