The Briefing … Emmanuel Macron the next President of France …

Posted on

Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

Emmanuel Macron has been elected the next President of France, achieving a decisive victory over the far-right’s Marine Le Pen.

Macron garnered an estimated 65.5 per cent of the vote, becoming the youngest President of the Fifth Republic at age 39. The poll was marked by high voter dissatisfaction – at 65.3 per cent, turnout at 5pm local time was the lowest for a presidential election since 1981, and a record 9 per cent of voters cast a blank ballot. While Le Pen was handily beaten, she received twice as many votes as her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, when he made the presidential runoffs in 2002.
