The Papua New Guinea government has told more than 800 asylum seekers they must leave the Manus Island regional processing centre before demolition work starts at the end of the month.

In a recording obtained by media outlets, a PNG immigration official can be heard telling asylum seekers to “consider your options” before the centre is closed, emphasising that “no-one will be settled in Australia”. The deadline leaves the Manus detainees in limbo, with many likely forced to return to their countries of origin if they cannot find accommodation in PNG or a third country willing to take them.
