TasCOSS Response to Federal Budget
The following lines can be attributed to TasCOSS chief executive Kym Goodes …
“What we were told was this was a budget about fairness, opportunity, and security but on first reading what we have found is that if you are Tasmanian, vulnerable or unwell then you can expect very little from your Federal Government – no fairness, less opportunity, little security,”
“What we were looking for in this budget was a vision that includes all Australians and builds on the things that unite us rather than focusing on divisiveness, unfortunately what we saw was two Australias. Tasmania is hard to find – is it possible our entire State has been relegated to the footnotes?”
“Shades of 2014’s horror budget re-emerged in the attack on the most vulnerable in our community through the measures targeting Australians on social security payments,”
“We can only trust that the Senate will once again refuse to support these kinds of measures,”
“It’s a great start towards stimulating more investment in affordable housing but it is not the comprehensive housing tax reform Tasmanians expected. It’s unfinished business and we need real leadership to tackle this issue,”
“There’s a lot of politics in this budget, but it is light on policy for Tasmanians.”
