Students to target Birmingham, Turnbull

Posted on

On Thursday morning in a coordinated action students will target the offices of PM Turnbull and Simon Birmingham as part of a national campaign against fee increases and funding cuts.

“The Prime Minister and the Minister for education will not get away with their savage attack on students. In Sydney and Adelaide students will seek to occupy the offices of Turnbull and Birmingham to show that student anger is not going away” said NUS education officer Anneke Demanuele “the government seems to think that they can get away with raising fees to their highest ever level at the same time as the largest ever single funding cut to universities. Students are kicking off a campaign the Liberals will wish they had never provoked.”

In 2014 in response to the budget students took part in demonstration and chased Liberal ministers off campus.

Sydney University education officer April Holcombe said “”Turnbull wants to kick students in the teeth, so we’ll take our response directly to his office. We’re going to make life miserable for the Liberal government until they stop doing the same to us.”

Daniel Neser, education officer at the University of Adelaide said “students are angry about these education cuts and fee hikes. We will let the education minister know what students think of him and make him think twice about attacking us.”

“Students won’t accept more attacks. The cost of living is already to steep and the quality of education has slipped. The government has begun a war on students, and today we are beginning our campaign that will defeat fees and cuts” said Ms Demanuele.
