Students to protest budget night
Students in Melbourne will meet on Tuesday the 9th of May to protest against the Federal Government’s war on students. Meeting at 6pm at the Parliament to march to an undisclosed location, angry students will burn an effigy of Simon Birmingham to display their outrage at the Liberals’ attack on funding and plans to increase fees.
“Birmingham is going to get a taste of what a real student campaign looks like. He said that protest is a right of passage for uni students, but what is clear is that being the target of student protest is a right of passage for education ministers” said education officer for the National Union of Students, Anneke Demanuele “Melbourne saw some of the largest student demonstrations against the Pyne and Abbott hundred thousand dollar degrees, and we are going to have large student demonstrations on the 17th of May”.
“Students in Sydney, Adelaide and of course, Canberra have already expressed their anger and shown defiance at the Liberals’ program. Simon Birmingham should be scared because now it’s Melbourne’s turn,” said National LGBTI Officer Chris di Pasquale.
“It’s beyond belief the Liberals think they can get away with pushing through a corporate tax cut to the tune of $50billion while they increase student fees to their highest ever level. The priorities of this government are geared wholly towards the big end of town. We are not going to sit back and let the minister price young people out of education,” continued Ms Demanuele.
The protest is part of a national campaign against the government’s attacks on students which will culminate in a national protest on the 17th of May.
