Rockliff utterly alone in nation-wide uproar over Turnbull’s rough deal for schools
Turnbull rips Tasmania off and Education Minister welcomes it
Tasmania gets another raw deal as Liberals fail to stand up to Canberra
New school funding model will hurt Tasmanian students and teachers
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff’s negligent acceptance of the Prime Minister’s wholesale rip off of Tasmanian schools has once again highlighted the Hodgman Liberal Government’s complete inability to stand up to Canberra.
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne said Mr Rockliff’s bizarre welcome of Malcolm Turnbull’s raw deal for Tasmania under the Commonwealth’s new schools funding model made him the lone voice of support among State Governments across Australia.
“Other State Premiers – as they should be – are incensed that Gonski funding has now been slashed to the point where Mr Turnbull’s own colleagues in the New South Wales Liberal Government are considering suing him in court,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“Mr Rockliff does not seem to understand that he has an obligation to fight for our fair share of funding.
“Why else would he so blindly welcome this new deal which delivers $22 billion less than the original Gonski agreement to schools across the country?
“In Tasmania that means instead of the extra $100 million that was agreed to over the next two years, Jeremy Rockliff has settled for an additional $200 million over ten years.
“That’s only an extra $40 million over the next two years – a massive $60 million shortfall on what was agreed to.
“Just last month Minister Rockliff told the Parliament that he had been “advocating ever since day one for the importance of Gonski funding”.
“Clearly he has not been.
“Tasmanians deserve much better than a Government that is not prepared to fight for the best possible deal but happy to accept second best.”
