Pressure mounts on Treasurer to hand over secret letter
Upper House votes for third party to view secret letter
Pressure on Hodgman Government to comply with the vote
Liberals desperate to keen document hidden from the public
The pressure is increasing on Treasurer Peter Gutwein to produce his secret letter in relation to the Tamar Valley Power Station after the Legislative Council today upped the ante.
Upper House members voted for the document to be assessed by an independent third party.
“The Treasurer has no choice but to hand the document over,” Shadow Minister for Open Government Madeleine Ogilvie said.
“The Upper House voted overwhelmingly to compel the Treasurer to provide the letter to an independent third party.
“A person of deep integrity, agreed to by the Premier and the President of the Legislative Council, should now assess the document to test whether it is indeed ‘cabinet-in-confidence’.
“It is time for the Treasurer to hand over what he’s been desperate to hide for more than a year, so that the people of Tasmania can make their own assessment as to the veracity of his claims.
“His excuses for keeping the document secret have been roundly rejected in the legal advice of the former Solicitor-General Leigh Sealy.
“Will the Government allow an independent person to assess who’s telling the truth?”
