Jobs number one priority as Murray Goulburn closes Edith Creek
Circular Head region faces further blow with 120 jobs on the line
Company needs to act to ensure jobs are protected
Sale as a going concern needs serious investigation
The Murray Goulburn Co-op needs to seriously investigate selling its manufacturing facility in Tasmania’s North West to save the jobs of 120 workers.
Shadow Primary Industries and Water Minister Shane Broad said the announcement today that the company would close Edith Creek was a massive blow to the Circular Head region.
“It’s a tremendous blow that only a few years after Murray Goulburn took full ownership of what was Tas Dairy Products we learn that it plans to shut the Edith Creek facility which will have a massive impact on the Circular Head community,” Dr Broad said.
“For a region like Circular Head, 120 jobs represents a huge slice of the workforce and those job losses will have a devastating effect on families.
“There is not the industry in the area to absorb those 120 jobs and if this closure goes ahead without another company taking over, it will mean families will have to consider leaving the region, if not leaving Tasmania, and that’s the last thing we want to see happen.
“I have had conversations today with Murray Goulburn and from what I understand they may be open to selling Edith Creek as a going concern.
“I encourage them to immediately investigate the possibility of that sale to protect these jobs and maintain employment in the North West.”
