Treasurer still ignoring three big projects

Posted on

• Launceston storm water, Cameron Bay and Macquarie Point still not on the Government’s radar
• Sewerage works at Macquarie Point must be addressed
• Development needs to be able to reach its full potential

Treasurer Peter Gutwein’s appearance at Friday’s LGAT conference confirmed the Liberal Government has no plan for three big water and sewerage projects holding back development in Tasmania.

The water treatment works at Macquarie Point must be addressed for the redevelopment to reach its full potential.

Launceston’s storm water problem needs to be rectified, and stage 2 of Mona won’t go ahead without work being done at Cameron Bay.

Shadow Local Government Minister Madeleine Ogilvie said Labor has a plan to pay for the projects.

“While the Government is delaying the inevitable, Labor would be getting on with providing a solution,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“The Macquarie Point Development Corporation admits that the plant must be moved for the development to reach its potential.

“But Peter Gutwein is offering no solution to unlock the development.

“The Government can’t put it off forever.

“Labor’s strategy to complete the project by partnering with superannuation funds, putting people’s money to work, has attracted strong support.

“It would mean there would be nothing standing in the way of the full development and vision for Macquarie Point.

“Labor welcomes initial work being done now but there’s no advantage in delaying the removal of the treatment plant.

“The Tasmanian Planning Commission ruled that odour issues must be addressed.

“It’s not a surprise that complaints about odour are not being made now, very few Tasmanians get close enough to the plant to smell it.

“That will of course change as the site is developed and visited more frequently.

“Labor’s strategy to fix Macquarie Point, Cameron Bay and Launceston’s storm water problems would unlock hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of investment.”
