The Saturday Paper: The Saturday Briefing …
On the afternoon of February 18, hours after the publication of a story about the suicide of Rhys Cauzzo, who was being pursued for an alleged debt owed to Centrelink, The Saturday Paper received an email.
The sender was a spokesperson inside the Department of Human Services. The email contained extensive details about Rhys Cauzzo’s debt and other information supposed to be protected – except in very specific circumstances – by the Privacy Act.
As people attest that they are too scared to give evidence to a senate inquiry, for fear of government retribution, Mike Seccombe reports on how far the government will go to defend its debt recovery system.
Plus: Paul Bongiorno on the arrogance and bluster of Scott Morrison, and Martin McKenzie-Murray on the film made inside Manus Island detention centre.
