Multinational liquid natural gas companies will face a Senate inquiry into corporate tax avoidance today as the government spruiks its new gas export restrictions.

Executives from BP, Shell, BHP Billiton, Chevron, Woodside and ExxonMobil will face questions from the Senate standing committee on economics, even as they dispute Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s claim that the new Domestic Gas Security Mechanism will lower Australian gas prices and ensure supply. Representatives for Chevron and ExxonMobil are likely to field especially rigorous questioning, given a report released this week found the two companies have used legal loopholes to avoid paying tax on billions in gas revenue.
