Turnbull fails Tasmania over gas price hikes
Brian Mitchell MP has come out swinging against the price hikes expected from the lack of forward thinking by the Turnbull Federal Government. (‘Industry worried by big gas hike’ Nick Clark, The Mercury 23/3/17)
“This is just another example of the Turnbull Government’s failure to address the gas crisis facing the nation.
“We cannot underestimate the seriousness of this crisis – without gas our national electricity market will fail, and our economy will follow. This crisis is not a surprise. We knew it was coming. That is why for two years Labor has argued for a National Interest Test on gas exports.
“Our National Interest Test will help ensure affordable and reliable supply of gas alongside a strong export industry.” Mr Mitchell says.
“The Coalition has trashed a National Interest Test, and instead they have ignored the gas market and let it reach this crisis. Now Malcolm Turnbull’s only solution is to beg companies to keep more gas in Australia. This is not a plan. It will not ensure security for Australia’s gas market, and it is not good enough. We need real leadership and we need it now.
“Only Labor can be trusted to ensure gas market security for the Australian community, including Australian industry.”
